A BIT OF FAMILY BACKROUND
The "Hirschmans of Indiana" presently stretch out to many of the corners of the United States, and at times to other continents. Although we know some of the story before the year 1850, we will start with the immigration of Jakob Konrad Hirschman, from Sulzbach, on the small Kocher River, in the Kingdom of Wuerttemberg, coming briefly to Mt. Carmel, Illinois, then on to Indianapolis, Indiana. The year was 1868.
"J.C.", as he was called, yearned for his brother Konrad to join him.
He even sent the money for him to make the trip. Konrad came to Indianapolis in
about 1875.(and paid back the money) They still had a sister in Germany, named
Susanna, b. 1855, but she elected to stay and marry a shoe store merchant in
Stuttgart, Ludwig Meier.
In Indianapolis these Hirschman brothers, Jakob & Konraqd, both started mattress factories, married and raised families. By 1895 they had joined factories under one name, The J.C. Hirschman Mattress Company.
They anglicized their names a little, becoming Jacob Conrad and the other simply Conrad. They dropped the second "n" off the family name. Aside, it is known, the double "n" in german can be written as an " n " .
More can be learned about these two pioneers on other pages; but, in brief, they produced two lines of descendents. This group of web pages is dedicated to those two immigrant brothers and their descendents.
